Dr. Gordon or as I call him, God Mummifus has been a bigger inspiration to me than he could ever have known or imagined.
My earliest fond memory was when I was about 11 years old and Billi took my mom, my little sister, and I on a hunt for a crystal ball he was buying for a friend for their birthday. On this quest, Billi took us to so many exotic places in Los Angeles that I had never laid eyes on being a little poor black boy from the ‘hood. I was introduced to some of the most interesting and intellectual type people. Each place we stopped I was able to eavesdrop and even sometimes participate in conversations about life, politics, religion, art, music, and philosophy. I was so intrigued by him and his friends, and every now and again, to make sure I understood and learned something, my God Mummifus would look down at me and pop those big eyes open and ask, “You heard that, Deon?” I’d smile back and shake my head very fast to let him know I was paying attention.
That was just ONE enlightened day out of many that I shared with my God Mummifus. In times of struggle and strife with my family life at home, Billi’s home was a beacon of hope, safety, and love for me. I always felt good there and found it very hard to leave sometimes.
I learned freedom and imagination under Billi and his husband’s roof. Seemed nothing was out of my grasp when Billi would talk to us about his life and where he’d been, and always encouraged me to follow my dreams.
Today, I am a successful TV Producer for MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew, and NBC’s The Sing Off, and have my own GLAAD-Award Winning LGBT television series, The DL Chronicles. I am in a happy 16+ year relationship with my life and business partner, and still infuse almost everything that Billi has shown and taught me both directly and indirectly with the way he lives his life and carries himself.
Thank you God Mummifus for everything you’ve taught me and for all of the positive influence you’ve given me that in a lot of ways, is directly responsible for my outlook on life, perseverance, and tenacity.
I love you so much!
